Using RamSoft Cloud PACS to Grow Teleradiology Practices

Dr. Bud Landry
Radiologist and Owner
New Orleans, Louisiana

Dr. Landry explains how RamSoft's cloud-based PACS platform has allowed his long-time teleradiology practice to support a diverse network of customers and quickly (withing 24 hours) onboard and activate new hospitals or clinics. He describes how the platform provides speed for retrieving and reading large studies and the speed of sharing reports with the referring clinicians, as well as with patients. Dr. Landry also shares how the cloud-based utility of the platform allowed him to quickly relocate and re-engage with his telemedicine and teleradiology practice in the wake of the extensive damage Hurricane Katrina inflicted to the IT and medical infrastructure throughout New Orleans.

Planning a teleradiology practice in the cloud enabled me to continue making money, continue taking care of patients, and keep practicing as a radiologist. After the storm, I quickly realized that everything needed to be in the cloud. I needed disaster recovery, and the cloud enables that. It allows me to store images and reports securely and accessibly, not only for myself but also for referring physicians and colleagues for collaboration.

I have a strong network of specialists across the country, and having everything in the cloud means I can collaborate easily. It ensures accessibility for me and my colleagues to assist me and provide the best patient care. The data is securely stored in the Azure Cloud, encrypted, and HIPAA compliant, so I don't worry about losing anything. I sleep well at night knowing all the images are safe.

Over the past few years, several of my clients have been audited by Medicare or other insurance providers. They would panic, but I’d tell them to relax because everything they needed was securely stored in the cloud. With scalability, I went from having 2 clients to 43 in my teleradiology service, and I can usually onboard a new client within 24 hours and start reading for them.

The OmegaAI collaboration is going to help me be a better radiologist, enhancing patient care. AI capabilities streamline my workflow, reducing the time spent on administrative tasks. The AI system observes and learns my habits, making those tasks less time-consuming.

I've been involved with teleradiology since its inception in 1991. Over the years, I've embraced the changes and grown with them. With RamSoft, it’s never felt burdensome. I’m always excited to learn what’s next and to see how technology can improve digital imaging.

One exciting aspect is how patients can be empowered. They can hover over a term in their report and get a layman’s explanation, which helps them understand complex medical terms like 'disc prolapse' or 'pheochromocytoma.' This accessibility will help patients make informed decisions, which is crucial when their health is on the line.

With modern systems, I can load images almost instantaneously. The AI helps resolve conflicts, like when two patients from different sites have the same birthdate. The system identifies these conflicts and handles them automatically, saving me time.

Teleradiology has accelerated rapidly, and the OmegaAI product is advancing logarithmically. If others look at this technology, they’ll see how it can enhance their practices. I’ve looked at other products, but none offer more than OmegaAI—some even offer significantly less.

With this system, I can work from anywhere, even in an airport lounge. If a doctor calls me to discuss a report, I can login and view the images immediately, without needing a dedicated workstation.

In critical cases, like pulmonary embolism or acute stroke, I can now reduce the time from the scan to notifying the doctor. In the past, it might have taken an hour or more to communicate critical findings. Now, I can notify the doctor within 10 minutes, significantly improving patient outcomes.

The psychological impact of waiting for results is immense. Patients with mammograms, for example, are anxious to know whether they have cancer. Reducing the wait time for results can dramatically improve their experience.

In the future, teleradiology will continue to grow, and the OmegaAI product will be at the forefront of that advancement. The convenience and capability it offers are unmatched, and I look forward to seeing how it continues to evolve.

Faster, more patient-centric imaging is closer than you think.
