RIS/PACS Workflow
One of the biggest challenges that imaging facilities face when installing a new RIS/PACS system is tailoring the system to their needs. A properly integrated workflow is critical for a diagnostic imaging practice to be truly efficient and is the key to maximizing revenue.
In order to deal with the unique challenges each facility presents, RamSoft products have been outfitted with a powerful workflow engine. This allows them to work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, teleradiology facilities, mobile x-ray companies, as well as a large number of various hybrid scenarios. On top of that, full compliance with the DICOM and HL7 standards as well as a large number of IHE profiles, allows the software to easily interact with the numerous other systems found in the imaging industry.
This segment of the newsletter describes an existing RamSoft installation to showcase the adaptability of the software.
South Florida Diagnostic Imaging Workflow
This Miami based diagnostic imaging facility uses the RamSoft One enterprise RIS/PACS product. The RamSoft One product is providing the site with a fully integrated RIS/PACS/BILLING solution.
The scheduling of appointments is done via phone, via fax, or via orders referring physicians place directly into the RamSoft web portal. The registration and check in processes are fully paperless. Any requisition forms are scanned in at the front desk and made part of the digital medical record. The patients fill out and sign all forms using Wacom tablets. All patient information is scanned in and stored digitally inside the patient’s record.
Once the deductible/co-pay is taken care of and updated in the RamSoft system, the scheduled study information becomes available to the modalities via modality worklist. This setup ensures that the patient and study data is only entered once, removing the possibility of errors due to duplicate points of entry.
For contrast exam, the patient is taken into the injection room first. Here, a questionnaire is completed and signed using a Wacom tablet before the injection is performed.
Next the tech brings the patient into the imaging room, chooses the ordered procedure from the worklist and performs the exam. Once the imaging is complete, the images are sent to RamSoft. At that point, the completed exam automatically appears on the tech's worklist. The tech scans in the requisition, verifies the images and patient info and adds any required notes. For ultrasound exams, the sonographer completes the exam forms electronically on a Wacom tablet. As soon as the tech completes their work, the exam moves off of their worklist and is ready for diagnosis.
The unread cases are now available to the radiologist. When the radiologist logs into RamSoft he/she automatically sees all the unread cases that have to be diagnosed. The radiologist dictates the findings directly into RamSoft. As cases are read, they disappear off of the unread worklist and are uploaded to an external transcription company.
The transcriptionists type up the reports within their application and make them available to the radiologist for sign off. Once signed, the reports are automatically sent back to RamSoft via an integrated service. The system associates the reports with the images, allowing them to be easily accessible for prior study comparison.
The referring physicians and specialists are able to log into the referring physician portal to access their reports and images. The portal, created using the latest in web 2.0 technology, is platform independent allowing the referrers to access their patient data on any computer.
